If you came into the world today and could pick your nationality, there are at least 15 better choices than to be born American, according to a study by the Economist Intelligence Unit. The firm looked at 80 countries, scoring them across 11 variables to determine “which country will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in the years ahead.” The results, mapped out above, are both surprising and not.

Infographic: The New Canadian Family

On Monday, the Agenda discussed a new report by Joel Kotkin, Distinguished Presidential Fellow in Urban Futures at Chapman University. The report, "The Rise of Post-Familialism: Humanity's Future?" argues that we are witnessing a new phenomenon, a shift, he calls, post-familialism. He writes,

 

"Today, in the high-income world and even in some developing countries, we are witnessing a shift to a new social model. Increasingly, family no longer serves as the central organizing feature of society. An unprecedented number of individuals — approaching upwards of 30% in some Asian countries — are choosing to eschew child bearing altogether and, often, marriage as well."

2012 National Geographic Photography Contest Winners

The winners have been named in the 2012 National Geographic Photography contest. As a leader in capturing the world through brilliant imagery, National Geographic sets the standard for photographic excellence. This year's competition brought 22,000 entries from over 150 countries, professionals and amateurs participating. Photographs were submitted in three categories: people, places and nature; and entries judged on creativity and photographic quality by a panel of experts.

Something to think about as we are making our New Year’s resolutions

Does geography hold the key to a healthier future?

Geographic information can help researchers analyze a range of health topics such as food-borne illnesses and breast cancer. "These are all things where place doesn't give us all the answers, but it gives us some ideas where to look," said Russell Kirby, a professor in the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida. Kirby, who has degrees in geography and epidemiology, is working to set up a GIS/public health certificate at his university.

Fun and Education with GPS Essentials from Richard Byrne

Yesterday, I published a post about creating QR codes for GPS locations to build scavenger hunts. In that post I mentioned an app called GPS Essentials that a friend turned me on to. I spent some time last evening having fun testing out GPS Essentials.

In addition to the expected features of showing your current latitude and longitude coordinates, GPS Essentials offers a bunch of other useful features. Using GPS Essentials you can measure your current altitude, measure distances, and record your tracks. You can export your tracks and waypoints as KML files to use in Google Earth and Google Maps. You can also import KML and GPX files to use in GPS Essentials to navigate to various locations.

This location will take you to a number of free Android apps for education and specifically Geographical education.

Scientists Seek Foolproof Signal to Predict Earthquakes

The dream is to be able to forecast earthquakes like we now predict the weather. Even a few minutes' warning would be enough for people to move away from walls or ceilings that might collapse or for nuclear plants and other critical facilities to be shut down safely in advance of the temblor. And if accurate predictions could be made a few days in advance, any necessary evacuations could be planned, much as is done today for hurricanes.

One aspect of getting back into the classroom and school environment is to listen to the great array of questions, challenges and responses I'll hear and be involved in. I love questioning and the potential depth to thinking it can generate. However far to often including in my own practice I prevent opportunities for taking the thinking deeper by posing a new challenge, problem to keep that engaging thrust of something new flowing in the room. This is good a trigger but like a gun firing the trigger too often at the same target can lead to the death of something. In this case deep thinking that challenges students.

Critical thinking is a skill that we can teach to our students through exercise and practice. It is particularly a skill that contains a plethora of other skills inside it. Critical thinking in its basic definition refers"  to a diverse range of intellectual skills and activities concerned with evaluating information as well as evaluating our thought in a disciplined way ". All of our students think in a way or another but the question  is , do they really think critically ? are they able to evaluate the information they come across ? are they capable of going beyond the surface thinking layer ? Can they make connections between what they learn and the outer world? Can they question the status quo of their knowledge ?

Climate change and the end of pasta 

The supposed debate among scientists over climate change has melted faster than the polar ice caps. National Science Board member James Lawrence Powell looked at all the related peer-reviewed scientific papers over the last several years. Twenty-four of those articles rejected the notion of climate change. Out of 14,000.

So let this be clear: There is no scientific controversy over this. Climate change denial is purely, 100 percent made-up political and corporate-sponsored crap.

Hi All: I am very pleased with the initial response of Toronto and Ontario teachers to the call for culminating activities. I realize that now is the time of year that many of you are starting to focus on culminating activities so I thank you all for starting this sharing portal . These lessons and activities have not any external vetting and it is hoped that you will sort through them and use portions or complete activities to support students DOING geography in all classes and destinations .

I compliment all the work done by both individual and collaborative teams of teachers . Any activity that we do is a process and we all add value to the activities as the move from class to class or year to year. Also it is part of a teacher culture to share and borrow from each other. However it is important that we give credit to those teachers who have taken the time and effort to create these activities and accompanying assessments. Please let us give credit where we can . Many of you will in-fact add value to these activities and I hope that you will reciprocate and send me any additions, modifications,  or changes so that they can also be posted.

This is very much a process and hopefully this is just a start and through this portal we can build a true repository for Geography activities in Ontario.
